Dr. Prem Reddy shared that founding the California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) was the culmination of years of determination and dedication to providing others with the opportunities he received. His vision and lifelong dream have been to give back to the community that welcomed him as an immigrant. Growing up in India, the value of education was deeply instilled in him, and being the first in his family to attend high school and college was life changing. Inspired by Nelson Mandela’s words, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” Dr. Reddy is grateful for the opportunity's education has afforded him and is committed to giving back.

Dr. Prem Reddy highlighted that CUSM was founded to tackle the national physician shortage, especially in underserved areas. According to 2023 data from the California Healthcare Foundation, about one-third of Californians live in areas with a shortage of primary care providers, particularly in rural regions and the Inland Empire, which has only about 40 primary care physicians per 100,000 people. The goal is to reach 70 to 80 primary care physicians per 100,000 residents.

CUSM’s mission is to inspire physicians to serve these underserved communities. The university is proud that many of its 520 medical students come from these areas and choose to stay in the Inland Empire and California after graduation. Over 90% of students are from California and underserved areas, and more than 33% of this year’s MD graduates are completing their residencies in the Inland Empire, focusing on specialties like internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, and psychiatry. These graduates are making a significant impact on healthcare in their communities.
